I think Amazon prevents new purchases until the item is not only
shipped but also delivered.

Now, is it more efficient to drive to the local grocery store and back
to get the item, including the time/energy/cost of the item being
shipped from the warehouse in bulk to grocery store in the first
place, or to ship it from the warehouse to your home via a delivery
truck ?

In both cases, collating multiple items into a single trip/shipment is
more efficient. Perhaps the Amazon buttons can do that too ?

Grocery stores receive most items in cardboard boxes too and generate
a lot of waste.

At some point, Amazon or another only retailer, will move to re-usable
shipping containers, and reduce the cardboard waste. Deliver a full
box, pick up an empty box.
