[TriEmbed] New TOF distance sensor

Rodney,

Sure, here is what I am thinking.

I am working with walkyourcity.org <http://walkyourcity.org/> to see if putting up signage in downtown Raleigh will increase pedestrian traffic. To measure this, we have been putting an 18” cable guard across the sidewalk with a vibration sensor inside. When a pedestrian steps on the cable guard, we register an event.

There are a couple advantages with this approach:
	- cable guards do not attract much attention
	- the sensor is completely hidden and protected
	- power usage is low so we can leave it for a couple weeks

However, there are some downsides as well:
	- it can’t tell which side of the sidewalk the person is on (can infer direction)
	- it might not count each pedestrian if two cross at the same time
	- sometimes the cable guard gets moved especially on trash day (don’t ask)

So, I was thinking about a sensor which could be mounted on a pole between the street and the sidewalk and oriented (perpendicularly?) to the walkway. Then we could count each unique range getting a better count and perhaps even getting a sense of which way folks are walking (if you assume Americans walk on the right most of the time).

Some thoughts:
	- IR beam - having to put a reflector on the other side and worry about alignment could be an issue
	- TOF - cool but unless you want to spend 150 Euros for the CERN model, <http://www.teraranger.com/product/teraranger-one-distance-sensor-for-drones-and-robotics/> will lack the range needed.
	- Ultrasonic - Expensive if you want one that works outdoors <https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11724> and don’t get be started on those cheap Chinese HC-105s - also power hungry

I think I will try this Ultrasonic sensor <https://www.sparkfun.com/products/8504> for a test unless you or anyone else on the list might have a better suggestion.

Thank you all in advance.

The Maxbotix sensors are much better but 5x the price. The outdoor version <http://www.amazon.com/Maxbotix-MB7060-XL-MaxSonar-WR1/dp/B00A7YH6M4/ref=sr_1_1?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1423859198&sr=1-1&keywords=outdoor+ultrasonic> is more expensive sill at $100.
