<html><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html charset=utf-8"></head><body style="word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; -webkit-line-break: after-white-space;" class="">Rodney, <div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Sure, here is what I am thinking.  </div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">I am working with <a href="http://walkyourcity.org" class="">walkyourcity.org</a> to see if putting up signage in downtown Raleigh will increase pedestrian traffic.  To measure this, we have been putting an 18” cable guard across the sidewalk with a vibration sensor inside.  When a pedestrian steps on the cable guard, we register an event.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">There are a couple advantages with this approach:</div><div class=""><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">  </span>- cable guards do not attract much attention</div><div class=""><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">      </span>- the sensor is completely hidden and protected</div><div class=""><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">   </span>- power usage is low so we can leave it for a couple weeks</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">However, there are some downsides as well:</div><div class=""><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">     </span>- it can’t tell which side of the sidewalk the person is on (can infer direction)</div><div class=""><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">       </span>- it might not count each pedestrian if two cross at the same time</div><div class=""><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">        </span>- sometimes the cable guard gets moved especially on trash day (don’t ask)</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">So, I was thinking about a sensor which could be mounted on a pole between the street and the sidewalk and oriented (perpendicularly?) to the walkway.  Then we could count each unique range getting a better count and perhaps even getting a sense of which way folks are walking (if you assume Americans walk on the right most of the time).</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Some thoughts: </div><div class=""><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>- IR beam - having to put a reflector on the other side and worry about alignment could be an issue</div><div class=""><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">       </span>- TOF - cool but unless you want to spend <a href="http://www.teraranger.com/product/teraranger-one-distance-sensor-for-drones-and-robotics/" class="">150 Euros for the CERN model,</a> will lack the range needed.</div><div class=""><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">    </span>- Ultrasonic - <a href="https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11724" class="">Expensive if you want one that works outdoors</a> and don’t get be started on those cheap Chinese HC-105s - also power hungry</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">I think I will try this <a href="https://www.sparkfun.com/products/8504" class="">Ultrasonic sensor</a> for a test unless you or anyone else on the list might have a better suggestion.  </div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Thank you all in advance.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class=""><div class="">
