Most of the time the BIOS will tell if the drive is defective during startup
of Windows, it's a certain key combo to load into it, I think F2 or ESC, or
DEL. If BIOS does not detect the drive, then I would recommend to connect a
sata hard drive (either SSD or mechanical) then install Windows (don't have
to activate it) then see if it detects the m.2 drive to recover the data.
Even if Windows will not load to the M.2 you may be able to get the data
off, then installing Windows to SATA drive will work with the existing
digital key for activating Windows from the M.2 drive with original Windows
OS on it.

My laptop crashed. It says no hard drive detected. This is a Dell Inspiron
7370 laptop with an internal SSD.

Sata M.2 256GB. Here is a listing on Ebay for a used one:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/333979414069

Does anyone have one of these (or compatible form factor) that I could try
putting into my machine to try

to determine if it is the drive or the motherboard that has failed? Any
other ideas?

I recovered files from my desktop crashed hard drive by making an Ubuntu
boot image on a thumb drive and it found my bad hard drive and files. I
saved them safely. I don?t remember all the details. It?s been a few years.
I know this isn?t exactly what you asked for but thought it might be
helpful. Good luck.

You can get an external m.2 to USB-C enclosure. They're super useful.
Make sure it supports m.2 SATA, not just NVME.

Thanks,
Josh

Very likely the Master Boot Record has been overwritten. What OS are you
running on? There are several bootable recovery images that might help.
