Thank you for the pointer, interesting article.  :-)

I don't have any experience with professional mic's.  I am guessing this is a big chunk of the expense?
The converter is not expensive.  I2S (1.4 Mbps max.) doesn't sound fast enough (192 Ksps * 18 bits = 3.5 Mbps), but there are many options for capturing the converter's output.
