[TriEmbed] ESP32 Help

I'm a little embarrassed but I found the problem - the initial install
didn't correctly install the virtual com port driver. In watching a YouTube
video at URL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jfb_PL-FEA

I caught my mistake and first searched the Web but then thought better and
located the drivers that I already had (duh) from Espressif, maker of the
ESP32. After I pointed windows to the first one listed in the driver
directory, it installed fine and I was able to use the Arduino IDE to load
the blink program, changing the onboard LED number from 13 that is on the
Arduino UNO to pin 2, the one on the ESP32. It's blinking away right now.

Although it is being powered from my Windows 7 USB with this small sketch,
I'm pretty sure I will need a better power supply for any serious programs
that use the WiFi. I'm thinking of using a tiny power supply I got from
Pololu some time ago on sale (thanks to Shane Trent for pointing out the
source).

I just took my first baby step with the ESP32 and I really appreciate Scott
and Pete giving the feedback that I am going to use to move forward with
more advanced programs.

I will try to make it to the Feb 12 meeting and hopefully have something
worth showing.

Thanks again Scott and Pete!

Dwight

I was just reading an article in the Jan issue of Elektor, where the author
mentions this:

"The ESP32, like its ESP8266 brethren, produces a lot of noise on the supply
line. Good noise suppression is essential. An additional capacitor can be
added between the + and - of the supply. A 100 uF capacitor is more than
sufficient. The ESP32 draws high peak currents (200 to 300 mA). The USB
interface cannot supply this much current. This means you have to use an
external power supply of sufficient size."

I just got an ESP-WROOM-32 and I'm having trouble just getting it set up.
I'm going through all the instructions for Arduino and Git but the serial
port refuses to show up. I read in one forum where it needs a separate power
source because the USB is not enough so I connected two AA batteries to the
3v3 (for 3 volts) and ground along with the USB to load a simple sketch, but
no dice, no serial in the Arduino tools menu to select. I remember some time
ago seeing one of the Triembed meetings on the ESP32 but I can't find it on
the website.

I hope somebody is using the ESP32 and can shed light on this problem. Any
help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Dwight
