I've used this method back when I was on an 1970's electronic home organ
kick. Often times the boards were wire-wrapped together, and would be a
nightmare to unwrap to get to the solder side, so I'd chop a bad chip
off at the body and solder a new one to the old legs.
I should probably refer to my strips as APA102C. According to here
(https://cpldcpu.wordpress.com/2014/08/27/apa102) APA102 looks like
better packaging than APA102C. Next shopping trip to aliexpress I'll
order a bunch of bare chips for spares.
