Ok, now I am confused. And I see how Pete got confused! I apologize for the extra traffic. So the AWS IoT button that just arrived yesterday has the rev 1 hardware? Any idea why that would be? Longer shelf-life or operation in low temperatures with the lithium battery? More robust transmission for IoT use? Or just an issue ramping production of rev 2 to meet demand?
The tear-down of the new button estimated the life of the Dash buttons to be 250 cycles for rev 1 and 500 for rev 2. But the official AWS IoT button site says "The battery should last for approximately 1,000 presses. When the device battery runs out of charge, there is no way to recharge or replace the battery." Do you think this means rev 2 buttons would actually last 2000 cycles?

Michael,
No, I stand corrected. The rev 2 Dash button is JK29LP! Just close enough that reading the tiny print on the back of the button and then on the screen looked similar! I look forward to seeing a tear-down of the AWS IoT button!

Michael,
My AWS IoT button has Model No. JK76PL on the back which is the same as the Rev 2 Dash Button. So expect they have the same internals. But at $20 a pop I am not ready to open this one to see.

Shane,
If I understand correctly the Amazon IoT button has different hardware than the Dash button, including a "user replaceable" battery.  The firmware is a bit different as well.  Of course at $20 a pop, one has a little different expectations.

Amazon's IoT Service claims that the Dash Button is good for 1000 presses.

After taking one apart from the "top down" I'm pretty sure the
bottom plastic of a rev 2 can be cut away with no affect on the
usability, but exposing the battery holder for easy replacements.
You would do this right after the first battery pooped out. :-)

Great Dash Button tear-down with information about
the rev2 design with Atmel chip. I seems that rev2 has a low
capacity battery but should last twice as many button pushes
(500 vs 250) because each transmit is shorter so it uses less
power.

This is backwards. My playdoh ones are model 76 and the
others 29. But with the move to "rev 2" it's likely random
whether you get one or the other, with the 76 only in the
less popular buttons that haven't turned over, I would
guess.

Also, my search of the FCC records was messed up. The JK76PL rev 1 files are here and the JK29LP rev 2 here.
