Brian,
I think if you want to use a Pi and want addressable pixels, then APA102
is what you want as it has a separate clock pin and isn't as
timing-dependent as ws281x. ws281x *can* work on the Pi
(https://learn.adafruit.com/neopixels-on-raspberry-pi/overview), it just
might be more trouble.
If you just want the whole strip one color then just buy a 'dumb' strip
and use a mosfet controller.
