[TriEmbed] FTDI Issues

So a while ago I set up an ESP8266 serial connection, and today I thought
I'd experiment with it. I plugged it up again, same way as before, except
now my FTDI adapter doesn't work. It doesn't even create a /dev device or
show up on lsusb any more.

The ESP chip overdrew its power supply before, but the last time I used it
was after that, so that can't be it.

What do I have to do to make a serial adapter work twice in a row? I don't
understand why these things are so delicate.
