A reminder of the January presentation - We will be watching the 2014
ROSCon presentation on NASA's Robonaut and then having a Q&A with Allison
Thackston.

https://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/m/31027

Robonaut is a humanoid robot that has been deployed to the ISS to assist
astronauts on the station. Eventual goals include fixing things - both
insided and outside the station.

Allison Thackston is the Robotics Perception lead for the project and has
done work including the following:

- Developed the safety monitoring systems for Robonaut 2 including velocity
monitoring, force and torque monitoring, and momentum monitoring.
- Managed interaction with TopCoder for crowd sourcing software
development.
- Support Nasa's open source simulator for Robonaut 2 by updating to latest
ROS and Gazebo releases
- Wrote api and kinematics controller for Robonaut 2 wrist in ROS/Orocos
- Updated kinematics controller to utilize task driven iterative solving
methods optimizing for minimum kinetic energy, singularity avoidance, and
joint limit avoidance.
- Wrote autonomous vision perception algorithms for challenging
environments for on orbit ops.
- Designed and implemented a new vision perception architecture, enabling
Robonaut to use open source libraries such as OpenCV, LTI-Lib, and SWIFT,
as well as proprietary libraries such as HALCON
- Implemented a hybrid force/kinematic controller
- Wrote / updated ROS nodelet drivers for imaging systems

Please join us for this exciting opportunity! If you are planning to
attend, please register so we can plan on the amount of food and drink for
the meeting.
