[TriEmbed] Electronics recycling

Fred Ebeling asked me about electronics recycling, rather than respond
directly to him, I though I would post to everyone, since there may be
other folks who don't know.

There are a few ways to do this, depending on what you have and if you
value convenience or cash.

Depending on your location, there are convenience dump stations scattered
around Wake county. There is one off of Dry Ave in downtown Cary, and
another at 266 Aviation, North of Morrisville, where you can take trash if
you don't want to wait for the truck to pick it up. They will take most
things short of construction debris.

At the Cary Dry Ave location at least, there is a dumpster into which you
may place electronics (monitors, computers, printers, modems and so forth).
Until recently, this was free. The last time I tried to use this, they
wanted $9 per item (I think that was what she said, sounded like a strange
number, but whatev's). I have not tried that route again.

For Wake County residents, at the South Wake Landfill (6300 Old Smithfield
Road, Apex) and apparently at the North Wake Landfill, though I have never
been there - they will take electronics as well as appliances (microwaves,
washer, dryer...). There is also a hazardous materials collection area that
is open Mon - Sat, 8-4. They will take old paint, oil, antifreeze and, more
importantly for the Geek community, Lithium, NiCd and Lead Acid batteries,
which *should not *be put in the regular trash. I take my Alkalines as
well, but they tell me that those are ok in the regular trash.

The above all apply for private individuals who are Wake Co residents,
though "enforcement" consists of simply asking "City of residence?"

If you have a "large" number of Lead Acid batteries (like swapping out a
large UPS battery pack), it may be worth taking them to TT&E metal
recycling at 1529 W Garner Rd in Garner, where they will pay by the pound
for the material. Not just lead, but steel and aluminum as well. This place
is a bit skeezy, and you will be photographed and ID'd since so many people
are stealing copper and taking it in for cash. (I would not send my wife
alone, but I have taken my kids with me, when you are done, you feel a NEED
to wash up.)

Finally, there is a place in downtown Raleigh called "Anything with a Plug"
at 1515 Capital Blvd, Raleigh, NC 27603, (919) 610-3465 They actually have
a truck that you can schedule a pickup if you have a large quantity or have
no method of transporting. As far as I know, they don't care if you are a
business getting rid of stuff or an individual, The only question I've
gotten from them is "How did you hear about us?"

And THAT is more than ANYONE EVER wanted to hear about electronics
recycling in Wake county. But if you have any questions, or I left anything
out, let me know!
