One of my classmates took a summer job at a company which had a PDP-8. They were loading their entire program using the front panel switches. He introduced them to the idea of using a short program to load their program from a paper tape. Yes, we were entering binary manually: it had no keyboard (or mouse) -- this part, plus a disk, is the whole machine.
