<p>I think I didn't word that precisely enough. Should have said
that although the portal gives you access to most docs directly
IEEE related, there are numerous paths where your membership
doesn't keep you from hitting paywalls. I expected a "you
scratch our back, we'll scratch yours" relationship between IEEE
and the other CS and CE journals. I'm fuzzy on the details and
can only say that after about the fourth time I was unable to
get what IEEE was ADVERTISING AS AVAILABLE I got PO'd.<br>
</p>
<p>Also, as you've pointed out in the past, a key reason for being
in the IEEE is to be part of a MASSIVE outreach and educational
program that may have no peer on the planet. For many of us the
membership dues are trivial in return for inclusion in this. For
me $200 was a ton, but I've now un-retired and will probably
renew again.<br>

done for me. That would bring the full registration down
to $120. So a few conferences per year pays for the
membership. Now I see the light. Oh well, maybe renew
later. (But the key reason I became inactive again is
'cause even with a membership they want lots of $$ for
access to the IEEE-sponsored documents I wanted to read
and that just burned me out.)<br>
