Prolific devices are almost as common as FTDI, maybe even more so. I have not run into problems, but I know I have a ton of cables and adapters that use the Prolific chipset.
Also, this is soft of a chicken and egg thing, if you don't have working Wifi, but a much nicer way to setup wifi than what most using a nano to edit the wpa-settings is to use:
<strong>sudo apt-get install wicd-curses</strong><br /><br /><strong>sudo wicd-curses</strong><br /><br />Of course, the apt-get command wont work if you don't have an internet connection, but if you could connect over ethernet temporarily.<br /><br />the wicd-curses command also lets you browse available networks, etc. It also makes it easier to setup the wifi to connect to any of series SSID's. <br /><br /><br /><br />
