I like both approaches.  Besides paying for food does the restaurant cost
anything?
Which area best accommodates 'show and tell'?  These are the questions that
come to my mind
but I will be out of state until the 16th.  So my opinion doesn't help.

Caps can help with ESD, but I'd suggest using purpose-made TVS 
(Transient Voltage Suppression) devices, which are usually more like 
diodes than capacitors.

Selecting appropriate TVS diodes is a whole deep-dive itself that I 
readily admit I don't fully understand...I generally go with whatever 
application notes suggest.  A basic rule of thumb is to pick one with a 
breakdown voltage slightly higher than the positive rail of your power 
supply, but lower than the maximum input voltages of the components 
involved.  That maximum is often Vdd + 0.5V, but read your datasheets.

My $0.02 on the discussion so far:

- Breadboards can have remarkably high internal resistance.  Beware when 
designing impedance-sensitive analog circuits, or when handling 
high-speed signals, as this combined with parasitic capacitance can 
really round off your sharp digital corners.

- Cutting perfboard down to size is easy with a pair of aircraft shears 
(aka "tin snips"), so I've never seen that as a particular drawback.

- The card-edge tabs are pretty useful but be careful of how much board 
there is on either side of the pattern; if you're hoping to plug into a 
card-edge connector, be sure the connector you select allows the width 
of the board (you may have to have extra contacts, or to trim the board)

- PCB design is a really, really deep topic that looks simple on the 
surface.  Go for it!  Start simple and learn, learn, learn!

It did rain and cause a "shelter in place" status for Black Rock City (this is the name given to Burning Man's planned city). It dried out within a day or so. The "terror" mostly came from folk flights home and be able to report to work. This cause some to hike out on foot to be bussed to the nearest city with further transport. And others daring to drive vehicles in the wet areas got stuck. Some treaded so deep they were buried

Thanks for the 1st hand report... Mainstream and social media made it sound
like there was a Quarantine for something more terrifying than just mud.
It was a flash scar because it all seemed to Go Away... and some of US
wondered if FedGov went in to clean up :rofl. (like a movie)

Happy to hear it was just another blown out of proportion news blip.

This is a follow up to the Burning Man conversation. For those that enjoy stats there is a report about leave no trace practices at Burning Man. The clean up takes months. And has to be approved by the BLM. Debris is called MOOP -matter out of place.

 Hi All!

I'm wondering if anyone on this list might know of a potential donor of a
new-ish entry-level oscilloscope to a local high school?

My son is the new Physics teacher at Hillside High School in Durham. The
school hasn't had a Physics teacher for the past few years, and the state
of their lab supplies is pretty dismal. Many items belong in the 'antique'
category.

He's received some money for student supplies for specific labs, but is now
working on acquiring more general-purpose equipment.

It seems likely that some local business/organization would be willing to
donate a relatively inexpensive oscilloscope to the cause, but he has no
idea who to approach.

Does anyone on the list have suggestions that I could pass along to him?

Can you be more specific about the term "new-ish." I have a couple of 
analog Tektronix scopes that aren't doing anything interesting. I also 
have a few scopes from the dawn of the digital age, when they were 
trying to figure out how to do digital oscilloscopes. Mostly 2 channel, 
100 MHz sort of scopes.

I can't get them to you for a few weeks (traveling). Let me know if 
they're of interest.

I also have scope or two and I suspect most members do.? There has been a changeover from CRT to LCD (just like TV's) and there are lots of CRT scopes gathering dust.? Note though that for about $350, you can buy a new LCD scope.? (Rigol, etc.).? I don't know what level of Impoverishment we're talking.? SplatSpace has a couple extra oscilloscopes that were going to sold at the
hamfest. I can talk to the rest of the board about donating one them to the

Thanks very much for the replies. I've checked in with Stephen regarding a
few of the details:

I suppose 'new-ish' implies that the scope works reliably and is considered
safe by today's standards. A lot of the donated equipment that is currently
in the supply room is really just e-waste, so the hope was to avoid
anything in that category.

Currently, there are no oscilloscopes, so anything meeting the above
criteria would be useful. One oscilloscope would suffice. Two or three
would allow more hands-on experience for the kids. More than three would
start to cause storage problems.

Note though that for about $350, you can buy a new LCD scope.  (Rigol,
etc.).  I don't know what level of Impoverishment we're talking.


Unfortunately, there is a $0 budget for any type of oscilloscope.  A new
Rigol would be lovely, if anyone happens to know of a business or
organization that might be persuaded to donate one.

I'll contact everyone who has replied directly to discuss possible
donations. Thank You!

Try reaching out to Keysight (formerly Agilent, formerly HP, etc etc 
etc).  I know they do giveaways and other community outreach type 
things; probably worth a call at least.

If a lot of the donated stuff is not working but not beyond repair, would
he be interested in any kind of triage / repair attempts? I'd throw my name
into the hat for that! And probably others on this list may as well.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll admit I hadn't thought to ask for that type
of assistance. I'll let him know to keep your offer in mind as he culls the
donated items.
