Well it's mostly true.  Old school NPN current sinks really are kind of 
like boat anchors and MOSFETs are a whole hell of a lot better and cheaper.

But we just so happen to have a few hundred boat anchors.  Screw it . . . . 
they work and I'm going to use them to drive bipolar steppers.  So what if 
I need a few resistors, we have them too.  If I can do the job with a 
drill, soldering iron, and some stuff out of a bin then I will . .  . try 
to stop me!
