Ken,
The 9331 boot loader doesn't do SD over SPI for boot strap. You have however inspired low cost alternative.
- Lift _CS on the existing flash.
- Add socket jumping all signals except _CS
- Add switch for _CS lifting to vcc across 10K
- Switch to soldered flash
- Load U-Boot
- Copy flash to RAM
- Switch to socket flash
- Copy RAM to flash
Now the whole project is $6 for a pair of sockets.
