[TriEmbed] Stepper Motor Controller

After looking at a dozen or more possible solutions, I figure it's time to ask the group.

I have three external linear actuators, bipolar 5 volt each, that I want to control with a Raspberry Pi using Python code.
All that needs to be done is movement along the screw - no load involved.
I could use three of the basic controllers that come with the $6.00 motor & controller kit I already have used successfully.
I wonder if there is a better alternative.
