[TriEmbed] geekSPARK 2015 call for talent - TETRIS on RHT'S exterior

Me too… I do not know any of you.. but this idea sounds pretty cool…. Ambient temperature gauge? Blood level alcohol? Automobile speed? The opportunities seem endless..

I am normally a lurker on this list, but as a geekSPARK organizing alumnus, I have to chime in:

With the single column idea, I can't help but picture a gigantic "test your strength" meter connected to a pressure-sensitive target being hit by a hammer. :)

I think our chance to pull this off would be a ton higher if we lit up a single column of windows instead of a 2d array.

We could not do tetris then... but we could make some touch sensitive control for the display. Like a Kit from Knight Rider like thing that you can move up and down and change the color of from the street level.

Also I am strongly anything against having something that people can post text to on the side of the building... some non RH building maybe :-D but not RH. Just sayin

That would be awesome. I've actually looked into a display like that... problem is getting it big enough, but not so big you cannot see out the back :P

I'm sure we did meet when I was there, but I can't place your name with a face for the life of me. Judging by your avatar, were you the one with all the kinect point cloud demo stuff?

I love the arrow idea :) that could be awesome.

Ian... Yes, a test is definitely in order. Let me look into what hardware I have around that could work for that and get back to you on scheduling. I imagine this will be something that only works at night though... no lights available that would work for daytime use :P

I'll come up with some rough numbers, but would know more once we know how many windows we could use.

Assuming much of the control hardware was loaned (from Maniacal Labs, Qualia, etc.) then the main cost would be LED strips and power supplies (I have a lot but not THAT many). We could probably use something like these that would probably do an entire floor: http://www.mpja.com/5-Volt-Power-Supply-25A-Switching/productinfo/18962%20PS/

5V at 25A for $5.... they are ATX form factor but they don't have to be pretty, they'll be inside.

Hi Adam,

I think we met at the geekSPARK planning meeting last week. The Tetris project sounds awesome!

Scope creep time. Allow people to actually play STAGGERINGLY ENORMOUS TETRIS? Also, if there was an LED arrow on the side, pointing toward the Red Hat Annex, our concerns about sparkconners being able to find the rest of geekSPARK would be quashed!

As for funding, I would guess the funding for this would come out of the geekSAPRK pot (which in turn comes from the sparkcon pot). If you can put together an estimate of costs, we can add it to the geekSPARK budget. I could be totally wrong though, Ian will know for sure.

While we wait for approval...
Can you explain a little more what your arduino shield does? I'm a little rusty on how mesh networks work exactly. Is everything still IP addressable? Do you connect it to WiFi at some point? What's the range and could it make it from one floor of Redhat to another (assuming the devices were effectively directly above one another).

Second... more a Question for Ian. Were we to get the go-ahead from Redhat (or another building) to do this, would it be possible that this project could be one for which, like some of the others mentioned at the meeting, there would be a chance of funding? While I don't think it would be egregiously expensive, all the LEDs and controllers wouldn't be cheap. Maniacal Labs could probably provide the LED drivers for the task assuming we can take them back at the end. But the LED strips themselves would have to be treated somewhat as consumables since they would need to be cut to size for installation. Not really sure how these things normally work, so any thoughts are appreciated.

By the way, Adam,. I've copied my friend David Guzman of RF Tek. He's the gentleman that I was telling you about if you ever want to make your board smaller than it already is...David a magician with pcb design. If you're able, you should come up to the Wireless Research Center in Wake Forest where he and I at Qualia, both have offices. We'd be delighted to have you! http://wirelesscenter-nc.org/

Awesome! :)

With your expertise in mesh networks, I think the biggest concern is the lights themselves and the driving hardware.

I actually already have all the code needed to not only control displays over the network but have multiple displays act as one (and it's all threaded, multiplexed, etc). So, for example, you could have a single one of the network boards you showed me controlling multiple lights on a single floor... basically one controller per "row" of the display. The big thing there would be finding places on each floor with continuously accessible windows. The controller would just run a receiver that understands my protocol and then my software breaks the matrix display up into sub-displays but we program the animation itself as if it was all one physically connected display.

I'm open to suggestions for what to actually use for the lights. The digital strips I use with our controller board are total overkill... we don't need single pixel control. The RGB analog strips you can get would be much cheaper but we'd need a way to drive and control them. Oddly enough... well, not really... Dan and I are already working on a controller for those kind of lights too. But it has yet to actually be developed yet. So if anyone has thoughts for something cheap and more off the shelf...

Anyways... that's my thoughts for now :)

Great meeting everyone!
