[TriEmbed] n-channel MOSFET issue

Brian,

It sounds like you may have your FET backwards. All power FET's have a
reversed biased body diode that will conduct with a drop of around 0.6V if
forward biased. And yes, the FET will turn-on and turn-off just fine when
connected backwards. Just reverse your Drain and Source pins and you should
be good to go.
