[TriEmbed] Good mobile platform for beginners?

Howdy,
I have an Arduino and I'd like to get a small mobile platform to play with.
 I'd like something
-Durable
-Moves on carpet
-Less than $50

I found some neat platforms online, but they are usually not carpet
friendly and more expensive.

I thought of an RC truck, and the prices are pretty cheap.  Integrating
with the control system would be a good first project.

What do you guys think?  Is there something I'm missing?
